Spotify has announced it’s testing a featured called ‘Discover’ for users to find new tunes. It will make use of a vertical feed of music videos, similar to the layout of TikTok, which you can scroll through to “like” or “skip” different songs.
The new Discover hub will appear as the fourth tab to the app’s navigation bar, in between Home and Search. Developer Chris Messina was one of the first to spot the function, describing it as a “pared-down version” of popular social media app TikTok.
According to TechCrunch, Messina first chanced upon Discover on the platform’s TestFlight build, a beta on iOS. Other than selecting the ‘heart’ to like a song, users can tap on the three-dot menu for more information on each song and artist.
It’s been posited that this video feed may make use of Spotify’s Canvas format, which allows artists to upload short looping videos instead of still images to accompany their tracks.
Spotify has said that, as per its insights, users are more likely to stream, share, or save tracks when they have a Canvas background. However, for those who prefer traditional album art, this option can be toggled on and off in the app’s settings.
While not much is known about what Spotify plans to do with Discover, or if it’ll roll out to users worldwide, the company said that it’s still very much in the testing stage.
“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time,” a spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Not only that, @Spotify Discover is basically a pared down version of a TikTok-style feed of vertical music videos (likely using their canvas format) that you can like or skip.#NewSpotify pic.twitter.com/hpOEZ8v9bl
