A Phillipines-based soft drink brand started trending on Twitter after its latest unusual advertisement went viral.
The drink brand RC Cola released a video titled [email protected]!!!! Basta RC Cola and it showed a schoolboy asking his mother if he’s adopted, after being teased by his classmates in school.
His mother told him not to pay attention to them, but the storyline got weirder when the boy removed his shirt and asked why he has four glasses attached to his back.
His mother burst into tears, before unveiling the “truth” that was long hidden from her son. She then proceeded to remove her head to reveal a soft drink bottle.
The clip, which was created by Manila-based indie shop Gigil, earned millions views despite being unusual.
According to Gigil managing partner Jake Yrastorza, the campaign shows how the brand is different from other sodas through the mind of a Gen drinker. The advertisement, which has word “basta” in its title, loosely translates to “whatever”, and this is reflected in the mindset of the Gen Z target audience.
“They live in the moment. They don’t need a list of reasons before they do something. They can do or buy something because—well, you know, whatever. There’s no need to explain. We appropriated that attitude and made the brand stand for it. Making the RC a mirror of our drinker,” Yrastorza explained.
“We used humor to make the brand stand for something cool in the minds of the Gen Z audience, so much so that they’d want to be associated with it,” Gigil associate creative director Dionie Tanada said.
Directed by indie director Marius Talampas, who is known for his storytelling skill and fresh comedic content, watch the ad below.
RC COLA – Basta RC Cola!
Nothing could have prepared us for this shocking ad from @rccola_ph that turned them from a quiet soda brand into the talk of the town! Surely, the cola-head image will forever be cemented in our minds and that is why it's #CreoADproved! pic.twitter.com/vnvHZ8LUOx
